Hey all, a quick status update and I’m afraid no more. The review of BIT.TRIP RUNNER is coming along, but it will still be a while. … I hope to get a lot, possibly all, of the work for the review done this weekend, but I don’t think I’ll have time ’till then.
As for touch typing, that project is on hold. I’ve recently acquired a new computer with a lovely new keyboard; yet sadly I am stuck in my old desk, which was not designed with a desktop computer in mind.
Well it’s been a week, and I have come to two conclusions.
Hunt and pecking is a terrible habit, and learning to touch-type well is really, really hard.
I make frequent errors, compulsively look at the keyboard, hit keys with the wrong fingers, and make more errors than I care to count(22 on this post to far – d’oh, make that 23). The worst part is that I can’t simply forget how to type altogether; instead I have to constantly wrestle with my old hunt and peck habits.
As someone who wants to be a (potentially solo) games developer, obviously typing is very important. I’ll be honest, I do a style very similar to hunt and peck. I use two fingers per hand and glance at the keyboard about 30-40% of the time; occasionally a 3rd finger gets in on the action but not much. Touch typing, which I’m sure you’re all familiar with, is superior; yet it must also be learned. It takes a bit of discipline to learn touch-typing, as it is infuriatingly slow and inaccurate at first. I have been told many a time that it is a worthwhile transition however.
